Food Service and Catering Ventures
Catering involves the cooking of food whilst food service involves the serving of food. Food service and catering establishments have become prominent features in our society, there are more than 130 000 food service and catering ventures that make up the hospitality industry with Australia. People are increasingly acquiring food from various establishments due to the upsurge in busy lifestyles within our society. Catering establishments refer to any type of business or venture that provides service of food, each establishment is trying to provide a service which meets the needs of their customers. This may be a milk bar, restaurant or takeaway-home delivery service. Consumers have a wide range of choices available within different formal and informal styles of catering services.
Types of Catering EstablishmentsMost food service ventures can be classified as commercial and non-commercial. Most food service and catering establishments operate to make a profit, however some exist in order to support people in need by providing important community services.
Commercial EstablishmentsCommercial establishments provide services for customers in exchange for money. They have an established business in which they wish to make a profit.

Non-Commercial EstablishmentsNon-commercial establishments work to support a client, they do not make a profit from their customers. Any profit made goes back into the establishment.

Non-Commercial EstablishmentsNon-commercial establishments work to support a client, they do not make a profit from their customers. Any profit made goes back into the establishment.
Examples are:
- Canteens: Schools, colleges, and universities, sport and work
- Fundraising food stalls
- Caterers: Hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, defence services, boarding schools, childcare centres, charities, relief and emergency services
